Week 9: Dear AP Psych Students

Image
Hello all! As the year comes to an end, it's time to look back on the past semester and reflect on what I've done in AP psych. My advice for taking AP Psych next year: Do the vocab! It helps you memorize the terms needed for a five on the AP and helps on the quizzes. Pay attention to the slides and lectures during class since the Nearpods have decent summaries of the terms you need to learn Take notes during class! Don't make it so that you have to cram the night before for the next day's quiz. Fiveable is the best resource, along with the textbooks in her class (actually take the time to read through them to do well on the AP) My favorite project was the brain-making project, where we got to build a (totally anatomically accurate) brain model using an orange and sweets! Also, we were able to eat the thing afterward too ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Hi Halfen! It's been a fun year learning Psych in your class this past semester. This is definitely going to help next year in decathlon ...

Week 8: Psych Memes!

Week 7: How Good Is My Memory?

Image
Hi all! It's time for me to test my memory and hopefully not immediately forget things on these online tests! Test 1: Short-term memory https://www.psychologistworld.com/memory/test Out of the 12 possible objects and words to memorize, I was able to remember 8 of them (no spoilers on what they are here). I believe that this test ii fairly valid since the amount of objects that humans can keep in short-term memory is around 7 things by chunking the objects into groups. Test 2: Short-term memory with photos! http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/puzmatch.html After being shown 20 photos of objects to memorize in 30 seconds, I was able to recall 11 of them through both chunking and relating the objects to each other. By creating stories about each object and finding similarities between them, it made it easier to recall them. I believe that this test is also valid, resulting in a better score since I was able to better visualize and find similarities between the objects. Test 3: Face ...

Week 6: Social Psych...it's real life

Image
Hello all and an early Merry Christmas as well! One thing I can stand behind is the fact that there is always a little bit of Christmas spirit in us, no matter the time of year! Even if it's summer, Santa will always take the spotlight... Surfing with Santa! Psych Concepts: Compliance Santa gives gifts to those who are good in society! In order to gain a gift from Santa, children will comply with his request and be on their best behavior. Also, for Secret Santa exchanges, friends will be nicer to each other prior to the event to fulfill each others' requests. Obedience However, after winter passes, children begin to relax and loosen their morals, causing pandemonium to be stirred once more. Thus, parents must now create new rules to enforce good behavior. If a child doesn't do good, parents can threaten their child with reporting their actions to Santa... This authority figure's direct order will cause a change in behavior based on social hierarchies. Social Facilitati...

Week 5: The Anything Blog

Image
Hello all! I recently came across an article talking about social hierarchies and the different stresses that come from it: ( Article link here ) Stress comes for us all, but our cortisol levels can vary depending on the type of situation we are in. However, the responses to these stressors are also impacted by the rank on the social ladder someone is in. A study on mice found that those with a lower social status struggled with social instability. On the flip side, those with a higher social status suffered from social isolation and loneliness.  Despite these findings, researchers believe that humans live in more complex situations; therefore, more studies are required in order for these results to be applied to us as well. This article reminded me of Maslow's hierarchy of needs, where social belongingness falls under "belonging and love". Even though esteem may be achieved through social success, they are missing the base of belonging. However, this may also contribute ...

Week 4: Senses and Stuff

Image
Hello all once again! Venturing across the strange plains of the internet, I scrounged around and discovered an article on the complexities of vision and how scary it is to lose one of our main senses. When Seeing Stars Through Your Eyes Isn't a Good Thing Article link Walking down the stairs with his trusted dog, stars started showing in the top right corner of a 66 year old's vision. These symptoms persisted and worsened as time progress, leading him to visit his ophthalmologist and seek treatment. There was an injury and inflammation in the macular region of the retina caused by infection, also compounded by the growth of a small cluster of abnormal blood vessels that threaten to completely take away his vision. However, this was able to be treated with the use of intravenous antibiotics and medicine injected monthly to prevent the blood vessels from growing further. Through this treatment, his vision was able to recover from 20/800, meaning he could only see stuff 20 feet a...

Week 3: Bioheroes

Image
Hello all once again! Based on the key given along with the fact that my birthday is on the 21st of September, my hero has special abilities regarding the temporal lobe (processing of auditory information) and Substance P (perception of pain).  Thus my hero shall be called the Telephone. The Telephone's abilities are the ability to hear sounds from incredibly far distances and the capacity to mute his perception of pain, allowing him to work terribly long shifts in his workweek.  Origin Story Being a part of a large call center, Telephone was originally one of the employees who spent most of his time in the office, only spending his vacation days and free time skydiving. Despite the strange hobby based on the exploration and freedom of the skies, Telephone was still chained to his job.  However, on one fateful morning, his parachute malfunctioned, leaving him to quickly decide where to break his fall above a suburban neighborhood. Quickly making his decision, this madman ...
